For adults, WHO defines overweight as BMI ≥25 kg/m² and obesity as BMI ≥30 kg/m². Obesity is multifactorial and may involve genetics, eating behaviour, physical activity, sleep, environment, medicines and metabolic factors.
Assessment
Common measures include BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, blood pressure, glucose/HbA1c, lipid profile and other individual risk factors. BMI is useful for initial assessment but does not directly measure body fat.
Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda discusses excessive accumulation of body fat through concepts such as Sthaulya and Medoroga. Assessment may consider Kapha, Meda Dhatu, Agni, Ama, Srotas, Ahara, Vihara and Prakriti.
Integrated approach
Balanced meals, appropriate portions, regular movement, healthy sleep, stress management and individualized professional guidance can form a sustainable approach to healthy weight.
